It’s time to break a really good habit. Just for a day…
In October 2016, there were approximately 54,000 registered charities in Australia.
New charities are registered each month, and in August this year alone, the Australian Charities and Not-for-profit Commission registered 192 new charities. So we’re spoiled for choice when it comes to who to support with our generosity.
People give in all sorts of different ways – some have three charities they support and will support for life. Most people give to causes that have a personal connection to their experience or the experience of a loved one. There’s nothing wrong with those motivations for giving, but you might like to shake it up a bit.
Shopping for a new charity
You might like to throw your support behind a newcomer, and build the capacity of an emerging charity. If you would like to support a new cause, you can find out which charities have been recently registered on the Australian Charities and Not for Profits Commission website.
If you would prefer to support a charity that has been established for a little while, why not opt to donate to a charity you ordinarily wouldn’t support? What rationale to use there is up to you – you might look to fill the gap of where government funding has been reduced in recent years. You might like to consider what communities, places or causes assist those in greatest need.
Australian charities cover a broad range of initiatives and activities, including animal welfare, human rights, education, health, nutrition, overseas aid and development, and homelessness. In the lead up to #GivingTuesday, branch out and extend your generosity to a new cause. Just for one day.
If your employer provides workplace giving, you can make a pre tax donation to your charity of choice here. Otherwise, you can donate directly via the charity website.
