Asbestos Diseases Research Foundation
Cause Area: Medical research
Mission StatementThe ADRI aims to improve the diagnosis and treatment of asbestos-related diseases and at the same time to contribute to more effective measures to prevent exposure to asbestos.
DescriptionAustralia has the worlds highest incidence of malignant mesothelioma per capita, with more than 600 new cases diagnosed each year, and experts have estimated that there are at least another 1,500 Australians with lung cancer caused by asbestos. This is a tragic consequence of the highly intensive use of asbestos and its products in Australia in the previous century and is estimated that as many as one in three homes in Australia contains asbestos. As a response to this hideous legacy, the Asbestos Diseases Research Foundation (ADRF) was established in 2006 as a charitable, not-for-profit organisation dedicated to assist and support the research efforts of the Asbestos Diseases Research Institute (ADRI), a stand-alone research facility focusing on asbestos-related diseases (ARDs). Through ADRIs research we aim to improve the diagnosis and treatment of ARDs and at the same time to contribute to more effective measures to prevent exposure to asbestos.
